Galvanizing is a finish, not a size. The pipe underneath the zinc is ordinary carbon steel pipe, made to the same standard and the same table.

Only the outside diameter is listed here, and deliberately. Wall thickness is set by the schedule, not by the material or the finish, so it belongs with the full carbon steel series rather than being restated as though galvanizing produced a second one. Mass is left out for a stricter reason: the zinc adds weight we have not been able to quantify from a source we trust, so publishing the bare steel figure under a galvanized heading would be asserting something we have not checked.
Why There Is No Separate Galvanized Dimension Table
Galvanizing is a coating operation, not a forming one. The tube is made to ASME B36.10M-2015, which fixes its outside diameter and its wall, and the zinc is a corrosion treatment carried on top of those dimensions. A dimensional standard describes the formed product, so there is nothing a galvanized-specific table could say that the steel table has not already said.
This is why galvanized pipe is ordered the way bare pipe is ordered — by nominal size and schedule, not by a size of its own. A 2-inch schedule 40 galvanized pipe and a 2-inch schedule 40 black pipe are the same pipe with a different finish. Both measure 2.375 in (60.3 mm) across the outside, and both take the same fittings.

Does the Zinc Coating Change the Size?
Not in any way the standard recognises. The coating is thin relative to the wall and it is applied to a pipe whose dimensions were already fixed and inspected, so the nominal series is unaffected.
What we will not do is put a number on it. We could not verify a coating thickness against a standard we hold, so this page publishes none — no coated outside diameter, no coated mass, no percentage. The figures above are the bare steel dimensions, which is exactly what they claim to be. Where a page here cannot confirm something, it says so instead of estimating.
Where Galvanized Sizes Are Not the Steel Sizes
Everything above is the American series. Ask the same question in Europe and the answer moves, because the tube usually supplied galvanised there is water and gas tube to EN 10255, a series that descends from the British gas-thread tradition rather than from ASME.

Neither series is simply a shifted copy of the other. At DN 65 it is ASME that stands apart — every other major series says roughly 76 mm and ASME alone says 73.0. At DN 150 it is EN 10255 that steps away, to 165.1 mm, while ASME and the EN 10220 seamless series both say 168.3. Either mismatch is a real weld-prep or threading failure on site, and it is why a galvanized fitting bought in one market may not seat on a galvanized pipe bought in another.
Galvanised Tube Is Not Ordered by Schedule Everywhere
A second difference sits underneath the diameter one, and it catches more people. The American series specifies a wall by schedule number. EN 10255, the series most galvanised water and gas tube is supplied to outside the Americas, classes its walls light, medium and heavy instead, inherited from BS 1387 and ISO 65. Asking a European merchant for schedule 40 galvanised tube therefore asks for a wall out of a different system, and the two are not translations of each other: they were written against different diameters in the first place.
Korea shows how far this can drift while the label stays still. KS D3562 reproduces JIS G3454 cell for cell, but KS D3507 keeps the Japanese diameters and takes the ISO 65 medium walls instead. At 65A that is a 3.65 mm wall against JIS’s 4.2 mm — a 13% difference on a tube of exactly the same outside diameter, with nothing in the size name to disclose which one arrived.
China splits the same way, and it splits by product rather than by country. Galvanised water and gas pipe there is made to GB/T 3091, which puts DN 50 at 60.3 mm, the EN 10255 figure. Seamless fluid pipe is made to GB/T 8163 on the GB/T 17395 diameter list, whose domestic B series puts DN 50 at 57 mm. Two pipes, one nominal name, 3.3 mm apart, each entirely correct for its own standard — and a galvanised line is exactly where the two meet, because the galvanised product is the one that followed the international series.
One further trap is specific to galvanised tube, and it is a publishing error rather than a manufacturing one. Several stockists still print the superseded BS 1387:1985 and DIN 2440 walls — 2.65, 3.25, 4.05 and 4.85 mm — under a current EN 10255 heading. Arithmetic is what exposes it: a DN 25 medium tube published at 2.41 kg/m resolves to a 3.2 mm wall, not to 3.25 mm, so the mass column and the wall column in those tables describe different pipes. It is listed with the rest in errors found in published pipe data, and in ours.
Identifying Galvanized Pipe You Already Have
A tape measure cannot tell you the material, the schedule or the finish — only the outside diameter, which is shared. Measure the outside, match it to a nominal size in the table above, then read the wall to get the schedule. The same reasoning applies to the corrosion-resistant alternative: stainless steel pipe sizes share these outside diameters too, and differ only in the wall series.
Reading the Marking Instead
Pipe is stamped or stencilled along its length with the maker, the specification and the size, and where that marking survives it is worth more than any measurement. It names the standard the pipe was made to, which is the one thing a tape can never recover — and on a galvanized line it is also the quickest way to tell a pipe made to the American series from an import made to a metric one, which measure differently at some sizes despite sharing a size name.
On installed pipe the marking is usually gone, painted over or facing the wall. In that case the sequence is measure, match, then check the fittings: threaded galvanized fittings are themselves made to a taper-thread standard, and a fitting that starts and then binds is better evidence of a mismatched series than a tape reading a millimetre out.
