How to Measure Pipe Size
Measure the outside diameter, then look it up. You cannot measure “the size” directly — the size is a name, and the outside diameter is the only fixed dimension that identifies it.
What to Measure, and Why It’s the Outside
Outside diameter is fixed by the nominal size and does not change with schedule. Every 2-inch pipe — schedule 10, 40, 80 or 160 — measures 60.3 mm across the outside. Only the wall differs.
The bore, by contrast, is different in every schedule, so measuring inside a pipe tells you very little unless you already know its wall thickness. Measure the outside.
The Four Steps
- Measure around the pipe. Wrap a tape measure or a length of string around the outside of the pipe and read the circumference. Measure over bare pipe, not over paint build-up, insulation or a fitting.
- Divide by pi to get the outside diameter. Divide the circumference by 3.1416. A circumference of 189.4 mm gives an outside diameter of 60.3 mm. If you have callipers, measure the outside diameter directly instead and skip this step.
- Match the outside diameter to a nominal size. Look the measured outside diameter up in the table below. An outside diameter of 60.3 mm is 2-inch nominal, or DN 50. The measurement will not equal the nominal size and is not supposed to.
- Confirm which standard the pipe was made to. The same nominal size has different outside diameters in different standards. If your measurement falls between two entries, check whether the pipe is metric, and check the material — copper and plastic use their own series.
If You Only Have a Tape, Wrap It Round the Pipe
Callipers give the diameter directly. A tape or a length of string gives the circumference, which is π times the diameter — so the measurement is useful the moment you divide it by 3.1416. Wrap the tape once round the pipe, keeping it square rather than spiralling, read the overlap, and divide.
The method has one quiet advantage over callipers: it averages out of the reading. Pipe is never perfectly round, and a calliper across one axis of an oval pipe reads high or low depending on where you happen to put the jaws. A tape goes all the way round, so what it returns is the mean diameter rather than one arbitrary chord. On a pipe that has been dropped, stacked or bent, that is the more trustworthy number.
Do the arithmetic in millimetres. A tape reading in eighths of an inch has to be converted before it can be divided, and the conversion is where the mistakes come in — whereas the whole dimension table is published in millimetres to one decimal place, which is finer than any tape will resolve.

The third column is the circumference the second one produces, so a tape reading can be matched without any arithmetic at all. Steel pipe is manufactured to a diameter tolerance of about ±1%, so a reading a fraction of a millimetre either side of these figures is normal, and the circumference figures inherit the same latitude multiplied by π. Measuring Copper Pipe
Copper is the exception that catches people out. US copper tube to ASTM B88 is named one-eighth of an inch below its actual outside diameter. A “½-inch” copper tube measures 0.625 in (15.875 mm) across the outside.
And a UK 15 mm tube to EN 1057 measures exactly 15.00 mm. Those two are both called half-inch in the trade and they are not the same tube — 0.875 mm apart on the diameter, which is far outside the clearance a soldered joint is designed for. They will not fit each other’s fittings.

Measuring PVC Pipe
PVC schedule 40 and 80 use exactly the same outside diameters as steel, across all 19 comparable sizes. A 2-inch PVC pipe measures 2.375 inches across the outside, the same as 2-inch steel.
It is often claimed that PVC is named after its inside diameter. It is not. The bore of 2-inch schedule 40 PVC is about 2.047 inches, which is not 2 either. Both steel and PVC carry the same nominal designation for the same historical reason, and neither number describes a measurable dimension.
Why Your Measurement Might Not Match Exactly
- Diameter tolerance. Steel pipe is permitted roughly ±1% on outside diameter, more at small sizes.
- Ovality. Pipe is not perfectly round. Measure in two places at right angles and average.
- Coating. Galvanising, paint and mill scale all add to a tape measurement.
- The wrong standard. If the pipe was made to EN, JIS or GOST, the outside diameter for a given nominal size is genuinely different — see nominal pipe size explained.
How Close Does the Reading Have to Be?
Closer than most people fear. The sizes are not packed tightly together: draw each one as the ±1% band it is permitted, on a single scale, and the bands never touch. Even the two nearest neighbours in the common range leave several millimetres of clear space between them, which is far more than the error in a careful tape measurement.
So a reading that is a millimetre or two out still lands in exactly one size, and the answer is not in doubt. What genuinely does cause trouble is a reading taken over a coating, a reading taken across a dented section, or a pipe that turns out to have been made to a different national standard — and only the last of those is fixed by measuring more carefully.
If the number you get sits squarely between two sizes rather than on one of them, treat that as evidence rather than as a bad measurement. It usually means the pipe is not on the steel series at all: copper, plastic and tube are dimensioned on their own systems, and a measurement that refuses to match is the clearest signal that you are holding one of them.
What a Measurement Cannot Settle
A measurement identifies a diameter. It does not identify a standard, and at some sizes those are not the same question. Of the 6 outside-diameter series that countries actually default to, the values at DN 65 span 3.3 mm — wide enough that a tape separates the American 73.0 mm from the roughly 76 mm the rest of the world uses. But the closest two of those series sit 0.1 mm apart, which no tape and few callipers will resolve. The measurement tells you the pipe is not American. It cannot tell you whether it is European, Japanese, Russian or Chinese.
At DN 50 the split falls in a different place: four of the 6 series agree within 0.2 mm, while the Russian domestic series and the Chinese B series both sit at 57 mm, 3.5 mm from the top of that range. So the same tape that is powerless to discriminate at one size is decisive at another, and which case you are in changes size by size rather than country by country.
The practical order is therefore: measure to find the size, read the marking to find the standard, and treat the two as separate facts. Any table that answers “what is 2½-inch pipe” with one number has quietly picked a standard on your behalf, which is why every table on this site names the one it is showing.
