China’s A and B Series
China runs two outside diameter series at once. The international one matches ASME and Europe; the domestic one does not, and it is the domestic one a mill quotes by default. At DN 50 that is 57 mm rather than 60.3 — and the fittings made for that pipe may well be 60.3.
The Two Series

Neither series is wrong and both are current. The difficulty is that the choice between them is made by which product standard applies, not by which country you are buying from.
The Bracket Trap
GB/T 17395 prints its preferred sizes with the imperial equivalent in brackets after them — written as 60(60.3), 108(114.3), 159(168.3). English-language sites reproduce the bracketed number and drop the one in front of it. The standard’s own text asks for the reverse: the bracketed sizes are given as the corresponding imperial specifications, and it states that the nominal size is normally used and the imperial size is not recommended.
So the widely republished claim that Chinese DN50 seamless pipe is 60.3 mm has the direction of the standard exactly backwards. The nominal diameter is 60 mm, and 60.3 is a cross-reference the standard tells you not to use.
Our compiled data settles it by membership. Of the 100 distinct outside diameters in GB/T 17395-2008, the domestic figures 57, 108, 133, 159 mm are all present, and not one of 60.3, 114.3, 141.3, 168.3 mm appears at all. The build fails if that ever stops being true.
How This Was Settled — By Formula, Not By Reading
The direction was not established by reading the table, because reading the table is what produced the error in the first place. It was established by re-deriving every published weight from the standard’s own mass formula and seeing which diameter the masses agree with. They agree with the un-bracketed integers.
All 3547 rows we hold for GB/T 17395-2008 carry a published mass and every one of them satisfies that check. Applied the other way round, against the bracketed diameters, the same masses would fail across the board.
The same pass caught an error inside the standard itself. At 402 mm outside diameter and 24 mm wall the published figure has a transposed digit; the formula and both neighbouring rows give 223.73 kg/m, and that is the value we carry. What a Buyer Actually Receives
The practical trap is not choosing between two catalogues. It is that a single order can land on both sides of the split.
- Seamless fluid pipe (无缝管), to GB/T 8163 and GB/T 17395
- Defaults to the domestic series — 57 mm at DN50. Mill stock lists are written this way.
- Galvanized water and gas tube (镀锌管), to GB/T 3091

- Butt-weld fittings, to GB/T 12459
- Uses 60.3 mm, because that standard states a preference for the A series.
Which means the pipe and its own fittings can default to different diameters, from standards that are both current and both Chinese. That is a 3.3 mm step at the weld prep, and nobody finds it on the packing list.
The Same Shape Appears in Russia
A domestic series sitting alongside an international one is not a Chinese peculiarity. GOST carries a domestic set plus a foreign-trade set, and the domestic Russian diameters are not Soviet inventions either — a number of them appear in the European register, demoted to its non-preferred tiers. Both countries kept an older European metric tradition that EN moved down the priority list.
