Why 2½-Inch Pipe Has Three Different Diameters

Put the bore-designated standards side by side at DN 65 and the usual story inverts. It is not that the world diverges randomly from America. Every other series here lands near 76 mm, and ASME alone says 73.0.

A spread of 3.3 mm on the outside of a pipe. That is not a rounding difference between two ways of writing the same number — it is three different pipes, all current, all correct within their own system.

ASME Is the Outlier, Not the Default

Most English-language charts print the ASME figure unlabelled, as though it were the number and the others were regional variations on it. The data says the reverse. At this size the international consensus is near 76 mm and the American series is the dissenter — and it is the dissenter that gets treated as the default, because it is the one written in English.

The mechanism is documented in the European series itself. Below DN150 the EN diameters descend from the British gas-thread tradition; from DN150 upward the series adopts the American one outright, which is why the two agree again at the larger sizes. EN 10220 does list 73.0 mm, but as Series 3 — its lowest tier, the one its own text describes as sizes for which very few standardised accessories exist.

Two Major Systems Do Not Answer the Question at All

The table above compares standards that designate pipe by nominal bore, so that DN65 names one diameter. Not every system works that way. GOST and GB/T designate pipe by outside diameter and wall thickness directly — there is no DN column in the standard to look up.

Both carry a diameter near 73 and a diameter near 76, as ordinary neighbouring entries. So the question “what is DN65 in Russia?” has no answer inside the standard — it has a trade convention outside it, and we publish those separately from the standards text precisely because they are not the same kind of claim. Inside China the Question Is Genuinely Open

This is not only an argument between countries. Chinese butt-weld fitting standards align to 73.0 mm, following the American series, while the water and gas tube standards use 76.1 mm. Both are current national standards, and the mismatch is written about in Chinese industry as a known weld-prep trap.

What This Means When You Order

A drawing that says “2½ inch” or “DN65” and names no standard has not finished specifying the pipe. The 3.3 mm between 73.0 and 76.3 mm is far outside the tolerance of anything that locates on the outside diameter, so the parts will not go together and the error shows up at the joint rather than on delivery.

What is the outside diameter of 2½-inch pipe?
There is more than one correct answer, and which one applies depends on the standard the pipe was made to. ASME B36.10M puts it at 73.0 mm.
